FFA Cup: relive live coverage of the opening night of the inaugural national knockout cup
FFA Cup Review
THE opening night of the FFA Cup round of 32 certainly delivered with goals, drama and cup magic.
South Springvale, from the third tier of Victorian football, carried on their giant killing run from the state’s Dockerty Cup qualifying campaign, with a penalty shootout triumph against Northern NSW NPL side South Cardiff Gunners, after it was locked at 2-2 after 120 minutes.
In Newcastle, Brisbane Strikers prevailed in extra-time in a thoroughly entertaining 2-1 win over Broadmeadow Magic. The Queensland NPL side came back from a goal down, but had a chance to win the match with eight minutes to go when Christopher Bowling saved Keenan Duimpies’s controversial spot-kick after Joshua Piddington was marched for a foul as the last defender.
But the Strikers eventually did enough, with an expertly taken goal from Scott Coulson in the 103rd minute.
FFA Cup Round of 32 goals
Elsewhere, Olympic FC were too good for Melbourne Knights, winning 3-1, while Sydney Olympic’s Gaitatzis brothers starred as the NSW NPL outfit came from a goal down to defeat league rivals Manly United.
